A Look at the Numbers

You may notice a difference in the sales numbers when comparing them to last year’s report. There are a few reasons for this: The system that’s used to collect the numbers has changed slightly; the method used to average out the numbers has been tweaked; and our system for presenting the numbers has been updated. So, while you’ll notice an increase in industry sales for 2007, sales actually declined by about 1% when you compare these figures with the new 2006 adjusted numbers, which are contained in this report. To determine the industry sales for this report, we garnered numbers from The NPD Group for sales totals, Technomic for reporting on the Top 45 chains’ portion of the sales, and infoUSA for pizzeria store counts.

Store Counts. Based on numbers provided by infoUSA, the total units in the pizza segment as of July 2008 showed a rise of 2,056. While that’s less than last year’s reported growth of
